Live and learn with a teacher
An increasing popular form of learning or improving a student’s English ability (particularly spoken English) is for them to acquire an English teacher and attend an intensive 1:1 course held at the teacher’s home.
What are the benefits?
On a 1:1 home tuition course your teacher focusses just on you, so you will make much more progress than on a group course in a language school.
A course designed just for you
Different to group courses where the teacher follows a fixed curriculum, most courses are personally designed to meet your academic needs and study goals.
Choose a schedule that fits around your life. There are courses starting every week of the year with a range of different tuition hours from 15 to 30 hours per week and a 10 hour intensive weekend course. If you have special request or need a customised course package, please contact us.
As you are living in the home of your teacher, you also have the advantage of being totally immersed in the language outside of lesson times which means you can use the English that you have practised during the lesson. This will help build your confidence and greatly improve your speaking skills.
You will be staying in quality accommodation with your own private bedroom. All teachers’ houses are inspected regularly to ensure the highest standards. Some of our teachers have a private bathroom available for an additional charge.
A friendly and professional teacher
All teachers have an English teaching qualification such as CELTA from the University of Cambridge or TESOL from Trinity College London or are fully qualified school teachers (PGCE). All teachers are fully inspected and regularly observed.

The teacher, Joan McClarmount, is an experience British Council accredited English teacher who creates bespoke courses for each student. A sample timetable for young learners can be found below:
As the mother of three teenagers, Joan understands the concerns that a parent has when sending their child on a language course. They want to be reassured their child will have a warm welcome, a caring host and a safe and comfortable home to stay in. They also want the learning environment to be relaxed and friendly and not to involve lots of other children speaking their native language out of class. Joan has many years’ experience of tutoring Young Learners and aims to provide a personalised, caring service. It is important that teenagers are motivated enough to cope with a one-to-one course and emotionally mature enough to stay away from home.
A stay at Dulwich English is also ideal for children who are visiting the UK prior to coming to study at a British boarding school or university. Living with a family is an excellent way to gain immersion into a culture and can also help out in exeat and half terms. English classes for teenagers must be both interesting and entertaining. Each course is designed to provide a well-balanced English course covering all the necessary skills – reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. We recommend a maximum of 3 to 4 hours of classes per day. As the teenagers are living in a family home, they will have many additional contact hours and plenty of opportunities to absorb the language during the day and evening with the family. If a student has particular needs, just let us know.
